The art of singing…

When singing….

-Think down when going UP~

-Think ‘legato’ ~ sing from one note to the next~no time to break and manipulate~

-Like waves crashing on the rocks, the voice flows without any force~

-Forcing the voice only creates a harsh & metallic sound~allowing the voice to BE creates a warm & inviting sound~

-Make sure to drop the jaw & don’t hold onto the voice; especially when singing higher notes, the voice is trying to vibrate faster so let it be free~

-The voice should sit right in front of you~not behind the teeth~

-Float voice in on the breath~voice needs breath first~

-Must have shape in the mouth before sound can become~

-Release tension in the body~practice floating the voice in on a ‘siiigghhhh’ & let yourself hang by rolling forward and letting it all goooo…..’ahhhhhh……’~

-Hold energy in the shape of the sound~be aware of ‘shape’~always~most important~

-We give our voice, breath & shape, & the sound will then resonate beautifully~

-We’re our masters of our own sound~

-Instrument is YOU so be gentle and take care~

-Jump around, dance, swirl, and twirl…do whatever it takes to release the left brain from analyzing too much so the right brain can naturally and organically take over & allow the voice to BE~

-Learn to sing through your pasagio~let your voice be ONE~no ‘chest voice’ & ‘head voice’ required~just one beautiful voice~

When warming up…

-Don’t judge~just let the voice be in its natural state in the moment~

-We don’t always have to ‘look good’~let there be times when scales & sound is off~we build our confidence & our sound matures when we’re non-judgmental & we allow our voice to be natural and free~

When performing…

-When it comes time to perform, we trust that everything we practiced will come naturally & breath & shape will ensure that our voice falls into the right places~

-Be in the moment when performing~don’t think to hard or analyze the sound~trust that it’s there because you practiced & the body knows what to do~

-Trust~it’s just a matter of getting out of the way and letting YOU shine through!

-Finally…

-Sing everyday! The voice is a muscle that needs to be exercised often to be strong & resilient~

-Set goals~

-Sing for others~

-Rather than dancing around your craft, focus on it~spend time with it~

-If singing makes you happy, SING~the rest will follow…
